MT BERRY, Ga.- The Berry Women's basketball squad faced the Centre Colonels on Saturday Night, marking the Viking's first home conference weekend of the season. The Vikings would come up short 54-46 after a furious late comeback attempt at home in the Cage Center.
The contest started off with early offensive momentum from Centre's frontcourt, which was later met with big time buckets from
Briaiah Lewis and
Avery Payne, tying the game 6-6. After many exchanges of turnovers and fouls, the Colonels ended the first
quarter with a 17-7 advantage over the Vikings.
This deficit didn't stop the Vikings from fighting though, with intensified defense entering mid-game. The second quarter saw a ton of free throw attempts and the Berry crowd knew they were in for a hard-fought battle. Throughout the second
and third quarters, the Vikings mounted growing pressure on the Colonels, with turnovers forced by Freshmen Avery Huffman and Isabella Ramirez.
Ending the game, the Vikings strong offensive efforts were shown on full display. Free throws by
Ava Travis and
Lauren Ellard helped put the Vikings within five to make it a 44-49 game. The Vikings ended up coming short of victory 46-54, but their strong chemistry and offensive strategy didn't go unnoticed.
Lewis led the Vikings with 11 points.
The Vikings continue action against Sewanee at home this Sunday, January 18.
