Vikings Overcome Slow Start to Trounce Tigers 71-39

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Berry College women's basketball team (8-8, 2-3 SAA) took on Sewanee on Sunday afternoon in a conference matchup at the Cage Center. After a slow start Berry was able to handle the Tigers with ease as they won 71-39.

Hannah Cleveland of Sewanee converted on her first three shots, giving the Tigers a 10-0 lead early on. The Vikings offense started slow, registering five turnovers before the first basket as Avery Payne broke the drought on a three-point play layup. The Berry offense remained in an offensive rut for the remained of the first quarter going 2-13 from the field and scoring eight total points. Sewanee was also going through some offensive miscues of their own as they were only leading the Vikings 13-8 at the break. At the media timeout in the second quarter, the Tigers remained ahead 16-10. The offense finally found some rhythm after the timeout with Elly Callihan making two straight shots in the paint, followed by Avery Huffman making the first three point shot for the Vikings on the day. The Berry Vikings took the lead for the first time at 22-19 with 1:33 left in the first half. Payne scored on a buzzer beating layup to increase the Vikings lead by seven over the Tigers at the half.

The second half started fast for the Vikings with Lauren Ellard making two baskets early. Ellard seemed to be the story of the third quarter for the Vikings as she also connected on two threes, finishing with 12 points in the quarter. Berry continued to pull away throughout the third, increasing their lead to 25 going into the fourth quarter. Gabrielle Aiello got in on the scoring action with two threes of her own in the fourth, as well as an and-one layup to cement any thought of a comeback from the Tigers. The rest of the fourth quarter stayed at a comfortable lead for Berry as they finished off the game, winning their second conference game on the year and improving to 8-8 overall. Ellard and Callihan each led the team in scoring with 12 points apiece.

The women Vikings are back in action on Friday, January 23 where they travel to Jackson, MS to take on Millsaps College.
