SAA Semifinals Await Vikings in Sewanee

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The semifinal round of the 2022 Southern Athletic Association Women's Soccer Championship awaits Berry in Sewanee, Tenn., this Friday as the Vikings face Centre in a rematch from an early season affair.

The Vikings are the No. 2 seed in the tournament after finishing the SAA regular season with a 5-1-1 record. The Vikings defeated Birmingham-Southern, the No. 7 seed, 2-0 last Saturday here at Bob Pearson Field to earn a slot in the semifinals.

Centre enters as the No. 3 seed after going 5-2 in SAA play this season. Centre's first loss in SAA play this season, and its first loss in nearly 2,100 days in SAA regular season play, came at the hands of the Vikings as Berry took a 2-1 victory. Its second loss came at Sewanee in the regular season finale, 2-1, as the Tigers became the SAA's regular season champs for 2022 with the win and Berry's scoreless draw with Oglethorpe.

The Vikings' 2-1 win over Centre came thanks to a pair of second half goals within four minutes of each other. Sophia Coon collected a cleared ball after a BC corner kick and fired in a shot from outside the box to give Berry the lead in the 67th minute. In the 71st minute, Tori Toellner scored the first of her six goals this season for the Vikings, spinning in a shot from the top of the box for what proved to be the game winner.

Centre had 16 shots in the game with the Vikings, with six coming on target. The Colonels would get a goal in the 78th minute, but Julia Massa made five saves to help the Vikings earn the win.

The winner of Friday's second semifinal will face the winner of the first semifinal featuring top-seeded Sewanee and No. 4-seeded Rhodes. Sunday's championship match is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST.
