Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Matthew Vargo

Vikings Secure Dominant Victory Over Millsaps

JACKSON, Miss. - The Berry College women's soccer team picked up their second shutout victory in three days with a commanding 4-0 win over the Millsaps College Majors on Sunday afternoon.

The win improves the Vikings to 8-4 (3-1 SAA) on the season, while dropping the Majors to 2-8 (0-4 SAA).

This was Berry's game from the opening whistle as they controlled possession and peppered Millsaps with several shots on goal. They fired six shots on target in the first 10 minutes of action, but pivotal saves from Majors goalkeeper Kayla Borden kept them off the scoreboard. However, it was only a matter of time before the Vikings found the back of the net, and they did so in the 14th minute when Mia Cutler finally got one passed Borden to make it 1-0.

With an early lead the Vikings continued with their foot on the gas. They kept attacking for the next 21 minutes until they got their second goal of the half. This time it came from Anna Robbins, who took advantage of a great pass from Grace Blanchard to score her fourth goal of the year at 35:54 to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead. They took that lead into halftime with a massive advantage in shots (19-4) and corner kicks (6-0) compared to the Majors.

In the second half, Berry picked up right where they left off. This time they outshot Millsaps 13-1, but they were held scoreless for the first 42 minutes of the half because of another strong showing from Borden, who finished the game with 16 saves. Despite that, the Vikings continued to look for more scoring chances in the final three minutes, and that persistence paid off when Giselle Aitken found the back of the net twice in the 87th and 89th minute. That made the final score 4-0.

The Vikings finished with game with an impressive 32 shots, including 20 on goal, while holding the Majors to just five total shots with three on goal. Aitken led the way with two goals on five shots, giving her the team lead in goals this season with seven. Robbins and Cutler each had one goal, but Cutler also finished with one assist. Kate Hill earned her eighth win of the year in net by making three saves and allowing zero goals in 90 minutes.

Berry looks to continue this momentum into their next contest against the No. 25 Trinity University Tigers on Friday, October 16. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
