Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Transylvania

ROME, Ga. -- The Berry College baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Transylvania on Saturday. Game scores were 12-8 and 6-5.

The Vikings dropped to 12-4. The Pioneers moved to 4-2 on the season.

In game one, Transy plated six runs off Berry starter Ryan O'Connell and never trailed in the 12-8 victory. The Pioneers outhit BC 18-11.

Freshman Casey Whitaker hit 3-for-5 with a triple, one run and two RBI to lead BC batters. Slade Dale and Greg Keel both collected two hits in game one. Dale hit one double.

Rex Rogers went 4-of-5 and Connor Blevins had four RBI to lead the visitors. Starter Trey Simpson (2-0) earned the win for TU.

The Vikings had a chance to earn the split in the nightcap. Trailing 6-5, Berry loaded the bases in the final inning before reliever Tom Banaham retired Ben Jernigan and Jacob Delk to end the game.

BC had 11 hits in the contest to Transy's nine. Dale batted 3-for-3, scored twice and hit his second double of the day. Both Alfred Francis and Brady Smith (one double) collected two hits apiece for the home team.

Berry starter TJ Montgomery (3-1) suffered his first defeat of the season. He went 4 1/3 innings, allowed five runs and six Pioneer hits.

For Transylvania, Adam Boone (1-1) pitched the victory and Banahan earned his first save of the year. Blevins was 2-of-4 with two runs batted in for the Pioneers.

The teams close their three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is 1 p.m. at William R. Bowdoin Field.
