Berry Baseball Sweeps Guilford and Moves to 6-0

ROME, Ga. -- The Berry College baseball team swept Guilford College on Saturday. Game scores were 5-2 and 6-2.

The Vikings improved to 6-0: the best start in Berry's DIII era. The visiting Quakers dropped to 2-3.


In game one, the Vikings rallied with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to prevail. BC tallied its four runs on three hits and were helped by two Guilford errors, which produced three unearned runs. 

Ryan O'Connell pitched five innings, allowed two runs, four hits and earned his first victory of the year. Tyler Will worked the ninth inning and earned his first save of the year.

Dusty Tyson went 3-for-3 with a double in the contest. Ben Jernigan and Hunter White both doubled for the home team.

Logan Jones collected two of the Quakers' five hits in the game. Guilford starter Parks Smithey (0-2) took the loss for the visitors. Guilford recorded six hits to Berry's seven.

In the second game, starte T.J. Montgomery (1-0) earned the win. He pitched four innings, scattered six hits and allowed one earned run. Four relievers followed Montgomery in the game.

Slade Dale went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Devin Skelton was 2-of-3 to lead BC hitters. Jernigan had the game's only extra base hit--a double off the right field wall to lead off the fifth inning.

The Vikes plated four runs in the second inning to break the game open.

Brett Shapcott went 2-of-3 and scored twice for Guilford. Starter Chase Shuford (0-1) took the loss for the Quakers.

The Vikings play at Emory University on Tuesday.
