Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Berry College defeated Birmingham-Southern, 76-70, in a Southern Athletic Association women's basketball quarterfinal game on Friday night. With the win, BC advances to face top-seeded Rhodes in the semifinals on Saturday.
All five starters scored in double figures for the Vikings. Emma Cook had 19 points (7-10 shooting) and 13 rebounds--both game-highs--to lead the Vikings. Chanlir Segarra and Mel McLean tallied 15 points apiece. Maggie Trimble scored 11 and Megan Walsh netted 10.
Berry got off to a great start and led by as many as 16 points in the first half. BC held a 47-33 edge at the break.
The Panthers, however, made a furious second half rally. BSC went on a 20-6 run in the first nine minutes of the second half to tie the game at 53. They even held a 63-59 lead with 6:51 left before Berry reclaimed the game.
BC (14-12) was helped by Segarra making eight free throws in the last six minutes. For the game, Segarra was 13-19 from the charity stripe.
"We came out with great energy and took the early lead," said BC Head Coach Stephanie Dunn. "And we showed great resolve by keeping our confidence. We fought back after losing the lead and I'm so proud of the job the two freshmen did tonight. Emma had incredible presence in the paint and Valerie McLure played tough defense on one of the top scorers in the conference. It was a team effort and a good win for our program."
Berry shot 52-percent (23-44) to BSC's 42-percent (35-59). The Vikings won the battle of the boards, 38-25.
Kayla Ford recorded 15 points to lead the Panthers. BSC ended its year with a 10-16 record.
