Late Heroics Lead Vikings Past Stormy Petrels and to Semifinal

Lewis Drops Career-High 26 Points

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - An instant classic was the result of Women's Basketball's first round contest against Oglethorpe, where they pulled out a 49-48 comeback victory.

Briaiah Lewis was terrific for the Vikings, scoring a career-high 26 points, including the go-ahead basket in the final minute to put the Vikings ahead.

Oglethorpe was on top early, jumping out to a 13-3 advantage at the conclusion of the first quarter.

The Vikings started to find their stride in the second quarter with a three-pointer from Jade Lewis that cut the lead to nine, 21-12 with five minutes left in the half. Free throws from Avery Payne and Briaiah Lewis cut the Oglethorpe advantage to just six points with 2 minutes and 39 seconds to play in the first half of play. Despite a Stormy Petrel 4-0 run, Avery Huffman came up big as she drained a three-ball to cut the lead back to seven, before Oglethorpe made another free throw to take a 29-21 lead into the halftime break.

The tide began to turn for the Vikings in the third quarter, as Elly Callihan got active on the offensive glass for a put back, before a steal by Jade Lewis set up her sister Briaiah for a tough layup in the paint to cut the Oglethorpe lead to just four. Briaiah continued to assert herself, going one-on-one in the lane to score six straight and cut the deficit to just 31-29 with 8:15 left in the third.

Oglethorpe responded with a run of their own to recapture a 39-30 advantage with just over four minutes remaining in the third. The Vikings would still face a 41-34 deficit at the conclusion of the third period.

With the tensions high,  it was Bri Lewis time once again, as she ripped off another 6-0 run of her own to cut the lead right back to 3, 43-40 with 7 minutes to play. With just under four minutes to play, an Elly Callihan steal and layup cut the Oglethorpe lead to two. A couple of splits at the free throw line from Briaiah Lewis left the Vikings still on the tail of the Stormy Petrels, down one point with a minute to play.

Briaiah Lewis did exactly what she had done all game, as she weaved her way inside for an unbelievable up-and-under finish to give the Vikings a 49-48 lead with under 21 seconds to play. Lewis came up big defensively as well to put it away, with a textbook contest on the Stormy Petrel last second attempt to give the Vikings a huge 49-48 victory, as they survive and advance.

The Vikings will face the Trinity Tigers at 12 PM EST in the semifinal in the Cage Arena.
