ROME, Ga — The Berry Vikings found themselves down 17 points at halftime. They went on a 9-0 run in the second half against Millsaps, but their rally wasn't enough to secure the win. The final score was 56-51.
"We started one of those games where we weren't hitting our shots and it was a low scoring game. That was the case for Millsaps as well, but we got behind and dug a hole early," Coach Stephanie Dunn said.
The Vikings were held to just 26-percent from the field while Millsaps shot 44-percent in the first half. Turnovers were also an issue for Berry who had a total of 10 turnovers while the Majors only had three.
"I really challenged the team at halftime to come out strong and make a game of it, and they did. We just weren't stopping them on the defensive end—but we came out and outscored them 31-19 in the second half," Dunn said.
Chanlir Segarra, who had a game-high of 27 points, was able to spark a run for the Vikings. Berry's defense was also stronger in the second half as they were able to hold the Majors to just a little over 30-percent from the field. Berry's second half field goal percentage increased to 41-percent.
Coming into the second half, Sam Perez and Velvet Johnson were in double digit figures for Millsaps (11-7, 6-2). Perez ended the game with 16 points, six rebounds and two assists. Johnson totaled 14 points for the visitors.
Emma Cook had a double-double for Berry with 15 points and a game-best 12 rebounds. BC led in rebounds, 38-33.
"I found the right combination of players who played hard and were willing to compete." We'll just have to continue to work on defense," said Coach Dunn.
The Vikings (10-9, 3-5) will visit Sewanee--another SAA opponent--on Friday at 7 p.m.
