ROME, Ga – Mel McLean scored a team-high 27 points against conference opponent Birmingham Southern, but Berry lost, 94-89, on Friday night. McLean made seven three-pointers, one short of a program record, and led the team with 14 rebounds.
The see-saw game had six ties and 11 lead changes. Emma Cook scored BC's last points to put the home team ahead, 89-86, with 2:23 left. The Panthers, however, outscored the Vikings 8-0 the rest of the way.
Chanlir Segarra produced 22 points, 11 assists and three rebounds for the game, going 14-14 from the free throw line.
Maggie Trimble provided Berry with its first points of the game with 19:40 left in the first half. She would go on to hit one more before McLean would continue that hot streak throughout the rest of the game.
Birmingham-Southern kept the game close and eventually tied up the game at 46-46 going into the half. They were able to out-rebound the Vikings 42 to 38, but Berry shot just under 50 percent from the field for the game. The Panthers shot 43-percent.
"I think both teams played hard," said Coach Stephanie Dunn. "We didn't execute as well down the stretch and they got a lot of easy put-backs under the basket, which was the difference.
B-SC improved to (8-10, 4-3). Elizabeth Bromirski tallied a game-high 29 points for the Panthers.
The Vikings (10-8, 3-4) host Millsaps, another SAA opponent, on Sunday in the Cage Center.
