Freshman Chanlir Segarra led the Lady Vikings with 14 points as Berry used a second half surge to beat visiting Oglethorpe 61-55 in a Wednesday evening matchup at the Cage Center.
After holding the visitors scoreless for the first 6:52 of the game, Berry soon found itself with a comfortable 17-6 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half. However, Oglethorpe went on a 13-2 run to knot the game up at 19 with less than six minutes left. After five consecutive baskets and five consecutive lead changes, Oglethorpe pushed ahead of Berry, finishing the first half with a 34-32 lead.
"Our youthfulness showed," said Berry head coach Stephanie Dunn of her team's first half effort. "We got self-focused and got away from our game plan of playing team basketball."
After Oglethorpe scored on a Sarah Giles jumper to start the scoring in the second half, Berry came on strong. Segarra scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half.
Dunn said two keys to success in the second half were keeping Giles in check in the paint as well as minimizing the effectiveness of Oglethorpe's Sarah Jones, who scored seven of her 10 points in the first half.
"It was a good win," Dunn said. "We're learning, and we're growing each game. Tonight was just another stepping stone."
Joining Segarra in double figures for Berry were Brittany Coughlan and Danielle Sisk, who finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Giles led all scorers with 19 points while Mareva Bone scored 12 and Jones added 10 points.
Berry's ability to rally in the second half was in part a result of holding Oglethorpe to a 22.6 percent shooting percentage in that period after allowing the opponent to convert of 45.7 percent of its shots in the first half.
Berry outrebounded Oglethorpe for the game, 46-39.
The Lady Vikings return to the hardwood on Dec. 10 when they travel to play Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn.
