Men's Soccer Defeats Centre 3-1

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Berry College men's soccer team continued their winning ways with a 3-1 victory over the Centre College Colonels Friday night at Bob Pearson Field.

The Vikings remain undefeated in SAA conference play (2-0) and improve to 6-3-1 on the season, while dropping the Colonels to 2-5-2.

The first half was evenly matched for the most part, but neither team would find the back of the net until the 38th minutes. With 6:41 left in the half, Leyton Brown pushed the Vikings down the field, took an initial shot that was saved by Centre goalkeeper Declan Miller, but Daniel Osho was in the perfect spot in front of the net to take the rebound and score his second goal this year.

That gave Berry a 1-0 lead at halftime, but Centre responded immediately in the first two minutes of the second half. At 46:49, Carter Sipes raced by the defense and sneaked his shot past Cooper Cherry to tie the game at 1-1.

That score held for the next 28 minutes of game time, but Berry played their best down the stretch to pull away from the Colonels. After an injury timeout, Duncan McKenzie threw the ball into Sam Carlson, and Carlson found the back of the net in the left corner to put the Vikings back on top in the 74th minute. With five minutes left to play, Brown slammed the door shut on any potential Colonel rally with a great goal in the top right corner of the net from far outside the box. That was the first goal of his college career and it secure the 3-1 win for Berry.

The Vikings outshot the Colonels 13-7 in the game and had ten shots on goals. They had six corner kicks compared to five for Centre, and both teams committed nine fouls. Brown finished with one goal and one assist. Osho and Carlson scored one goal each, while Cullen Maas led the team in shots (4) and shots on goal (3). Cherry picked up the win in net with two saves and one goal allowed.

Berry goes on the road for their next game on Friday, October 9 against Rhodes College. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
