DANVILLE, Ky. - The Vikings concluded the sixth and seventh inning of the second game of their three-game series where they fell by a final score of 7-5 and also dropped the final game to the Colonels 5-2.
Game Two (Berry 7 - Centre 5)
With two outs in the top of the first inning, Nick Brunswick hit a laser right down the middle that galvanized the Viking offense early on. Pendleton then would single and advance Brunswick all the way to third base. Riley Uhls then stepped up to the plate and delivered an RBI single to bring Brunswick home and make the score 1-0. Jackson Halla controlled the mound at the start of game two and kept the Colonels scoreless in the bottom of the first.
The second inning was highlighted by defense and stellar pitching, as Halla poured in two strikeouts to help the Vikings hold the Colonels to another scoreless inning.
The pitching of Halla sparked a fire under the Viking bats in the top of the third. The top of the lineup proved to be lethal for Berry, as Knapp, Garcia, and Brunswick all produced offensively with Garcia and Knapp scoring to make the score 3-0.
The bottom of the third proved fruitful for the Colonels as well, as they scored two runs to claw their way back into the ballgame.
The Colonels completely closed the gap in the bottom of the fourth after a scoreless Berry inning as they homered to even the game at 3.
After an overnight delay to due to inclement weather, Centre continued to heat up their bats in the sixth, as they drove in four runs to take a commanding 7-3 lead at the bottom of the sixth.
The Vikings were able to salvage some momentum in the top of the seventh, with an RBI double by Riley Uhls that scored Pendleton and Garcia, but it was not enough, as the Vikings fell in the unorthodox seven-inning affair by a final score of 7-5.
Game Three (Centre 5- Berry 2)
The two teams sparred in the opening inning of game three, with both defenses handling the opposing batters fairly easily.
The same theme turned out to stay true for the Viking batters in the second inning. In the home half of the second, the Colonels put some pressure on the Viking defense as they loaded the bases. With Nicholas Angelakos on the mound, the Viking defense rallied behind him to get the last out of the inning, leaving the game scoreless.
The Vikings continued to struggle to find a spark in their bats in the top of the third. Defensively, the Vikings got out of the third unscathed again, as Angelakos struck out a batter and Andrew Pendleton closed out the inning as he rocketed the ball to third base to catch a runner stealing and end the bottom of the third.
Berry went in order at the top of the fourth as their bats faltered again. After getting two straight outs, Angelakos allowed his first costly hits, as an RBI single scored a Colonel to make the score 1-0 as the game headed to the top of the fifth.
Things did not pick up for the Viking offense in the fifth. and that opened up the opportunity for Centre to seize control with Mason Schoonover replacing Angelakos on the mound. Centre found their rhythm and drove in four runs to take a 5-0 lead over the Vikings.
This finally lit a fire under the Berry offense in the top of the sixth inning. A single from Caleb Spikes and a wild pitch by Centre set him up at third base with just one out to speak of. An Aiden Cloud sacrifice fly led to Spikes scoring and giving the Vikings some life. Berry's defense got a much-needed scoreless inning and set up the Viking bats for success in the top of the seventh, still trailing 1-5.
The seventh inning proved fruitful for the Vikings, as Uhls drove in Brunswick with an RBI single to bring the Vikings within three runs. The Vikings got it done defensively again in the bottom half to keep the deficit at 2-5.
However, Tyler Cassidy made history as the new Division III Leader in appearances on the mound, making his 74th appearance coming into get the last two outs for the Vikings today.
The Vikings would not be able to generate offense late in the final two innings and fell by a final score of 2-5 against the Colonels.
The Vikings' next game will be at home on April 8 at 6 PM ET against Covenant College.
