MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - In the midweek non conference contest against the Covenant Scots, Berry baseball took to their home field to push for extra innings, falling in the bottom of the 11
th 5-4.
CJ Whaley earned the start on the mound for the Vikings in this non conference contest against the Scots, throwing three innings and giving up three hits and one run with two strikeouts.
The first inning was a shutout on both sides that trickled into the top of the second, but Berry made some noise in the bottom of the inning after a
Riley Uhls double and an
Aiden Cloud single to score Uhls for the first run of the game. A sacrifice fly in the top of the third would tie the game at one run a piece.
In the bottom of the third, the Vikings would see a new arm on the mound, Veen and leave two stranded with one hit before
Jackson Collett began the fourth inning in relief of Whaley. Two strikeouts and a ground out for the first three batters sparked some momentum for the Vikings defensively as Berry headed to the plate.
Offense was still stagnant until Covenant broke the curse with a five hit inning to score three runs with
Jon Strydom retiring Collett after the Scots went up quickly at 2-1.
With four runs on the board for their opponent, Berry needed to make some moves offensively. In the seventh, a fielders choice for
Nick Brunswick scored
Garrett Lang who reached on a walk to bring the score to 4-2, but it was not until the bottom of the eighth before the Vikings could tie it at four.
Facing off with Schock on the mound, Berry's
Austin Jetmore and
Aiden Cloud reached on singles and
Charles Pulaski loaded the bases on a walk. With
Garrett Lang in the box a catchers interference call would score a run for Berry and an
Alex Knapp single tied the game.
Tyler Cassidy made an appearance on the bump in the ninth to hold off Covenant and as Berry went back to the plate to try and end the game, the Scots pushed for extra innings.
It was not until the top of the 11th inning that Covenant would find a run with two hits. With Berry heading to bat in the bottom of the inning they would strand Garcia on third as the Scots recorded the final out.
Berry will return to action at William R. Bowdoin field for more SAA play this Saturday and Sunday as they host Hendrix College for senior day.
