Vikings Unable to Overcome Majors

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Vikings took the field against the Millsaps Majors on Friday afternoon for a doubleheader where they dropped game 1 by a final score of 15-5 and game 2 by a final score of 15-2.

Senior center fielder Alex Knapp broke the single-season Berry record in the Division III era for stolen bases with a magnificent 33 stolen bags on the year.

Game One (Berry 5 – Millsaps 15)

With Mason Snyder on the mound, the Vikings gave up a double to Millsaps' lead off batter which then set up disaster for Berry later in the top of the first.

After generating two outs, the Vikings gave up an early home run to make the score 2-0 heading into the bottom of the first.

An Alex Knapp walk and some brilliant base running by him would result in him scoring for the Vikings to make the score 2-1 at the end of the first inning.

After giving up a run to fall behind 3-1 in the top of the second, the Vikings stalled offensively in the home half of the second, leaving the Majors with a two-run lead.

An outstanding third inning from Snyder halted the Millsaps bats, as they went away in order behind the arm of Snyder. A leadoff base hit from Caleb Spikes later resulted in him scoring off a sacrifice fly from Joey Garcia, bringing the Vikings within just one run.

Some more good work from Snyder led to another fruitless inning from the Majors in the top of the fourth. A spurt of offense comprised by a Riley Uhls double and an Andrew Pendleton single up the middle led to Uhls scoring to tie the game at three.

The momentum shifted in the top of the fifth inning, as the Majors drove in a two-run homer. Later in the inning, another Major would send one over the fence, giving Millsaps a 6-3 lead.

In a crucial bottom fifth, the Vikings could not string together offense, leaving the score at 6-3. The Majors then added to their lead to take a commanding 8-3 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Vikings found the offense they needed to cut the lead to just three runs. The top of the eighth spelled disaster though as a three-run home run and a grand slam closed the door on the Vikings as they fell by a final score of 15-5.

Game Two (Berry 2 – Millsaps 15)

A resounding first inning from the Majors set the tone, as they drove in five runs, including a three-run home run that gave Millsaps a comfortable 5-0 lead at the conclusion of the top half of the first inning.

The Vikings were able to respond though, as Tanaka Mukono pinch ran for Knapp and scored off an Uhls single to make the score 5-1.

A couple of quiet half innings from both teams set up a disastrous third inning, as the Majors drove in a run and then clobbered a grand slam to make the score 10-1.

The Vikings were finally able to cover some ground in their comeback effort at the bottom of the fifth, as a couple of extra base hits from Austin Jetmore and Ethan Finch led to Jetmore coming home to make the score 13-2.

The Vikings would not be able to generate any late game magic despite a valiant effort, falling in game two 15-2.

Berry returns to action tomorrow at 12 PM ET to close out their three-game series against Millsaps.
