SEWANEE, Tenn. - In their penultimate game of the regular season, the Berry College Vikings fell to the Sewanee Tigers 8-19. Following the loss, the Vikings dropped to 2-3 against conference opponents and 3-8 overall.
To get things going, Sewanee won the face off for the first possession of the game, but the Vikings set the tone by forcing a shot clock violation. Though unable to capitalize on the shot clock violation, the Vikings kept Sewanee away from the goal, forcing a turnover, and Finn McClendon capitalized, scoring the first goal. Sewanee tied the game, finding a man on a hail mary from midfield for their first goal and after some back and forth, the Tigers took the lead. The advantage was short lived, Braxton Rich finding the goal to tie things up for the Vikings, but the Tigers tacked on one more goal before the end of the period, keeping a slight advantage heading into the second quarter.
Early in the second quarter, Joey Cuthbert set up the Carrolton native to score once again, tying the game back up for the Vikings. The Tigers had an answer for the score, putting themselves back up by one. Tad Zappa found William Lee for another goal to tie things back up. Tired of the back and forth, the Tigers were able to string together two goals, giving them their largest lead of the game. To stop the bleeding, William Lee returned the favor, finding Tad Zappa for a goal, the Vikings back within one. Winning the faceoff following the goal, the Vikings had the potential to tie, but the Tigers had other plans, grabbing the momentum to take a three-goal lead into the half, the score 8-5.
The Tigers pounced coming out of the half, keeping the momentum to extend their advantage to a game high eight goals. Joey Cuthbert added a goal to his total, making the score for the Vikings six, but Sewanee added two more before the end of the quarter, taking a nine-goal advantage into the final quarter.
Early in the fourth, the Tennessee native found Tad Zappa for his second goal, bringing the Vikings score up to seven. The Tigers continued to pour it on for the rest of the quarter, the final score 8-19.
