MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Berry Baseball fell to the Scots of Maryville College this afternoon, 11-9.
A three run ninth inning for soon to be conference foe, Maryville capped off the road win for the team. Berry led the entire game until the last inning.
On the mound for the Vikings today fans saw a plethora of the staff with
CJ Whaley getting his first start of the year, throwing four with four hits and two runs. His impressive stance had Berry up 8-2 in the afternoon game.
It all began with a quick eight pitches from Whaley to bring
Alex Knapp to the plate for a double down the left field line. A ground out from
Joey Garcia would advance him and another one from
Nick Brunswick scored the first run of the game for a Vikings 1-0 advantage.
Maryville answered that run in the top of the second inning with a sacrifice fly, but three hits and two runs in the bottom of the inning regained the Berry lead with a
Charles Pulaski double and singles from
Chase Edmonds and
Garrett Lang.
Berry continued their scoring while Whaley held it down on defense in the third.
Riley Uhls two run homerun highlighted the inning to increase the lead 5-1, although it was a windy day, Uhls homerun was gone even if the air was stagnant as he blasted over the left field fence into the top of the trees.
In the top of the fourth, Maryville answered one of the runs before the Vikings headed back to the plate for an
Andrew Pendleton three run double to right field. Now up 8-2, Whaley was relieved by
Aubrey Higgins and then
Cole Porter came to the mound after two walks. Maryville would find two hits and three runs in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to only three.
Scoring went stagnant for the Vikings as Maryville's bats seemed hot. The Scots scored off a two-run homerun over the right field fence and now found themselves only down by one run. Now it was
Jon Strydom's turn on the bump for Berry.
In the top of the seventh, the Scots found another homerun, this time solo to tie the game at eight. Berry finally found another run after going scoreless for two innings.
Caleb Spikes sacrifice bunt advanced Uhls who singled to the shortstop and an error by the third baseman would score Uhls a few batters later to aide the Vikings in another lead at 9-8.
The eight inning was scoreless for both sides, but in the top of the ninth, the Scots found another two-run homerun with
Nicholas Angelakos on the mound for Berry to take an advantage of two, then capitalized on a sacrifice fly for a late three-run innings. The Vikings were unable to answer with any hits or runs in the bottom of the inning.
Berry Baseball returns to action at LaGrange this Friday before hosting Marietta and LaGrange this weekend.
