MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Berry College Vikings fell 1-0 to the Southwestern University Pirates to open up SAA conference play on Friday evening at home.
In the first half, the Vikings came out controlling the pace. They created seven shots, poking the ball loose and speeding out towards the Pirates' goal, but they couldn't find the back of the net. Southwestern only had two shots as a result. Any offense Southwestern did get close to the goal,
Cooper Cherry shut down, earning a save to help keep the Pirates off the board. The Vikings went into the half in a stalemate at 0-0.
Throughout the second half, the Vikings kept control of the pace. Berry's defense was stifling, only allowing Southwestern to take one shot entering the final seven minutes. Despite more offense, the Vikings couldn't capitalize by finding the back of the net. A tie seemed inevitable until the Pirates got a chance at a corner kick. The ball found its way to a man in front of the goal, and Southwestern pulled off a header to get on the board and take the lead with five minutes to go. The Vikings were able to control the ball in the final minutes of the game, but the Pirates fought to keep them away from the goal to walk away from the field with a win.
The Vikings remain at home to take on the Trinity University Tigers this Sunday, October 5, at 11:00 a.m.
