MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Hosting the Conference Quarter-final game against Birmingham-Southern in today's contest, the Women's Basketball team showed why the finished number two in the regular season with a twenty-point win over the panthers, 73-53.
Four Vikings hit double-figures, but
Sylvia Kahoro led with 19-points and was the key in the early advantage over the Panthers that was everlasting.
Kahoro opened up the game with three threes in three minutes for a quick nine points!
Elly Callihan and
Karlee Armstrong added to the scoring frenzy with Kahoro tacking on baskets of their own and pushing the lead to seven at 20-13. The first period ended after a Panthers three was responded with a Kahoro layup to put the Vikings up four (22-16).Â
In the beginning of the second, Berry began to pull away a little bit from the visitor, reaching a margin of ten with a layup from
Kenadie Lee right under the five-minute mark (30-20).
The seventh seeded Panthers refused to lose hope and brought it to five with under a minute to go, but Lee's late jumper took the score to 35-28 heading to halftime.
Doubling the Panthers points in the third period played a huge role into the final of this game, the 18-9 period score created the distance they needed to deem successful in the first-round victory.Â
A free throw from Lee shot the Vikings up by 20 late in the third, but a 6-2 run led by BSC cut it to a 16-point game as they approached the final ten minutes of play.
Coach
Thomas Johnson cleared the bench in the fourth and young players found quick baskets to keep the Berry lead and get up as much as 29 with a layup from
Jayda Wood.
The Panthers ran out of gas with Berry outscoring them in each quarter to advance in the Southern Athletic Association Tournament!
With this win the Women's team advances to the Conference Semi-Finals hosted by Millsaps College, taking on #3 Centre at 5:00 PM CT.
