MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Berry College defeated Oglethorpe to start the second round of Southern Athletic Association play, 3-1, Wednesday in the Cage Center.
The Vikings set the tone early and took the night's first set. The Stormy Petrels went out to a quick 7-3 lead, but once the Vikings got into a flow, they took the first set 25-13.
The second set of the match moved quickly as the Vikings took an early lead 8-2 and never looked back. Junior setter
Lindsey MacDiarmid played a significant role in the match, with 21 assists and an ace. The offense was led by
Bella Boston, as the junior right-side hitter put down nine kills. Junior libero
Kate Whittle sealed the set with back-to-back aces.
The Vikings and Stormy Petrels went back and forth for most of the third set until the last few points. The Stormy Petrels didn't want to hit the road empty-handed. They had momentum from the start of this set and fought until the end of the set. Oglethorpe walked away with the win, 25-23.
The Vikings rallied to take the fourth set and the match. The longer the set went on, the stronger the Vikings got. Senior middle blocker
Olivia Mallow ended the night's final set with a big block to secure the victory for the Vikings.
The Vikings will return to action on Friday to take on Sewanee at 7 p.m. in the Cage Center in SAA play.
