MOUNT BERRY, Ga.-
Peyton Breissinger had a career-high 21 kills as No. 12 Berry won its Southern Athletic Association season opener 3-1 (25-15, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23) against Oglethorpe University on Wednesday night in the Cage Center.
The Vikings took the first set 25-10. The Stormy Petrels put up a fight to start the first set, keeping it at a back-and-forth affair until the Vikings went on a five point scoring run, giving them a 12-7 lead. Berry took control of the rest of the set allowing only seven kills in the first set and forcing the Stormy Petrels into a -.097 hitting percentage and 10 attack errors.
The second set was slightly more contentious with 15 ties and seven lead changes. Neither team was able to pull away from the other until eventually, the set was tied 20-20. Berry (5-2, 1-0) scored three in a row before the Stormy Petrels called a timeout, then came back with two points of their own. Yet and still, the Vikings were able to put Oglethorpe away, 25-22, with kills from
Jazzy Innis and
Molly Bergin.
The Stormy Petrels continued to put up a fight into the third set, eventually breaking away to a lead of 15-11, forcing a Berry timeout. The Vikings found themselves down 22-14 after taking yet another timeout, but they managed to work their way back into the set at 23-21. The hill proved to be too high to climb in the frame, however, as two BC errors allowed Oglethrope to off the Vikings, 25-21.
In the finale, the Vikings were stuck in neutral offensively before
Bella Boston came off the bench to spark the team. Boston would record three kills in the set, with her final kill giving BC a 21-17 lead. Breissinger's 20th and 21st kills of the night gave the Vikings match point, 24-21. Oglethorpe fought off two of them, but a Stormy Petrels attack error gave the Vikings a 25-23 victory.
Breissinger's career-high in kills in a match came in part due to her nine kills in the fourth set.
Jazzy Innis had a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs.
Emily Rapach led all players with 47 assists, while
Kate Whittle's 21 digs were also a match-high.
Berry is back in action on the road on Friday in Danville, Ky., facing Centre College at 6 p.m. in SAA play.
