No. 12-ranked Berry Vikings (6-2) won their fifth-straight match defeating Southern Athletic Association foe Centre College in three sets (25-23, 25-22, 25-16) on Friday evening in Danville, Ky.
The first set started off slow for the Vikings, as they found themselves down early 5-1 to the Colonels. Berry couldn't seem to recover from the deficit for the majority of the set, and came down to the wire with Centre ahead 21-17 in the final moments. After a much-needed timeout, the Vikings finally took the lead 23-22 on a kill from
Molly Bergin. Berry was able to find a way to win the set 25-23 off an
Olivia Mallow kill.
The Vikings found their groove winning the second set 25-22. Scoring four unanswered points to start the set, Berry rode momentum for the rest of the way. They distanced themselves from the Colonels 18-11, however, Centre managed to score eight points in the latter half of the set to pull within one, 23-22. After a bad set by Centre set up set point, Berry was able to put it away thanks to a Peyton Bressingger kill.
Berry started off the third set strong yet again putting distance between themselves and the Colonels 14-4. Keeping Centre at an arm's length, the Vikings were able to end the night in the third set 25-16.
Molly Bergin recorded a double-double with a match-high of 15 kills to go with 10 digs.
Olivia Mallow put up five total blocks as BC recorded 8.5.
Kate Whittle recorded 17 digs on the day.
Berry is back on the road next Saturday traveling to Sewanee, Tenn. to take on the Sewanee Tigers at 4:30 p.m. EDT.
