Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It took the entire contest, but the Berry College men's lacrosse team was narrowly topped by Christopher Newport University on Friday night 10-9.
CNU tallied the go-ahead goal with just three and a half minutes remaining in the game, capping a back-and-forth contest that saw 57 combined shots.
CNU jumped out to a quick 2-0 advantage before goals from Jacob Kaplan and Jason Wilhelm evened the contest in the first. Dylan Rice found the back of the cage in a man-up situation to give the Captains a 3-2 lead after the first quarter.
The Vikings rattled off a trio of goals in the first five minutes of the second to take their first lead of the game 5-3. Berry would score once more before holding a 6-4 advantage at the half.
CNU regained the lead in the third, scoring their third man-up goal of the game. The Vikings answered with Chris Berchock and Jason Wilhelm scoring to even the game at eight goals apiece heading to the fourth. The Captains found a goal with just over 13 minutes remaining, but Chris Berchock answered several minutes later. With a defensive battle ensuing, CNU was able to find the game-winner late, improving to 2-0 on the year while Berry falls to 1-1.
