Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Matthew Vargo

Vikings Get Their Second Win With 4-1 Defeat of Covenant

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The Berry College women's soccer team defeated the Covenant College Scots 4-1 Tuesday night on the road thanks to four different Vikings finding the back of the net.

The Vikings improve to 2-0 to start the season, while the Scots fall to 0-3.

Much like the LaGrange contest, Berry put the pressure on early in the offensive zone. They managed three quick shots in the first eight minutes of action, but Gianna Maimone got the team on the board at 10:31 off an assist from Laina Engelbart.

The Vikings managed three more shots on goal for the rest of the first half, but were denied each time by Covenant goalkeeper Bronwyn Kickasola, and the game went to halftime with the score still 1-0.

In the second half, the Vikings kicked it up a notch by outshooting the Scots 14-5. Giselle Aitken led the charge early in the second half, first by netting the team's second goal at 55:37, and just four minutes later set up Sienna Christensen for her first goal of the year to make it 3-0.

From there, the Vikings were in complete control of the match. They only allowed one shot on goal for the next 20 minutes of game time, and put the final nail in the coffin in the 80th minute with an Emily Wagoner goal to make it 4-0.

Covenant did score three minutes later to make it 4-1 but the outcome was already secured.

Overall, the Vikings outshot the Scots 22-7 as a team and forced 10 corner kicks for the match. Aitken finished the game with one goal, one assist and three shots on goal, followed by one goal each from Maimone, Christensen, and Wagoner. Engelbart and Abby Morgan also finished with one assist each.

Kate Hill started in net for Berry and picked up her second win of the season with two saves in 80:50 of action, allowing zero goals along the way.

The Vikings return home to Bob Pearson Field for their next match on Thursday, September 10 against Agnes Scott. Kick off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
