ASHLAND, Va. - Today brought out an opportunity for the Berry Vikings to keep making strides early in the season coming off of their 6-1 win against the Piedmont Lions. Unfortunately, they fell short to the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets in a 3-1 loss, marking their first of the season.
The start of the game was slow for the Vikings, as they conceited a goal in the first two minutes of the game, falling behind 1-0 early on from a set-piece conversion.
Not even a minute later, the Yellow Jackets put up another goal to double their lead, which put the Vikings in a hole early on. The game stabilized with each side producing chances and fighting their battles, but the first half ended with Berry still trailing 2-0.
The second half carried over the same stalemate as the first. The Vikings had grown into the game and they were looking to put themselves back in it, but unfortunately Randolph-Macon managed to score a third goal to give them a sizable cushion in the 71st minute.
The Vikings did not give up however, as in the 85th minute, Elijah Van Heijden converted a great shot from out side the box, for his first goal of the season. The goal was assisted by freshman Luke Mullvain, but the game did end with a final score of 3-1 in favor of the Yellow Jackets.
The Vikings look to right the ship and reestablish their winning ways tomorrow at 12 p.m. against the Roanoke College Maroons in Salem, Virginia.
