LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The Berry College baseball team took on the Covenant Scots in a midweek matchup and lost in a close game by the score of 11-10.
Covenant jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first before
Brady Greene came in in relief to put out the fire. The Scots again scored one more in the second to increase the lead to 4-0. The Vikings offense woke up in the top of the third, scoring five runs total in the inning.
Tanaka Mukono and
Chaz Moore both drove in runs, Moore with an RBI single and Mukono on a fielder's choice.
Daniel Hong and
Chance Edmonds then both recorded two-out RBI hits to push across two more runs and give the Vikings their first lead of the day at 5-4.
Mason Schoonover relieved Greene from the game in the bottom of the third. Covenant did not take long to tie the game, with a no-doubt home run on Schoonover's third pitch of the day.
Going into the fourth inning, Berry and Covenant were all square at 5-5. The Scots scored five in the fourth and brought the lead back to five runs at 10-5 heading into the fifth inning. Berry responded with two runs in the top half. Covenant added a third solo home run in the fifth.
Austin Jetmore went deep for his second time this season in back-to-back games for Berry with a two-run home run to cut the Covenant lead down to 11-9.
Marco Cabrera entered the game on the mound in the sixth and recorded the first zero for Berry. The Vikings loaded the bases in the seventh but could not score as the score remained at 11-9. Cabrera got one out in the seventh before being relieved for
Jon Strydom.
Garrett Lang drove in one run, and the score would be 11-10 heading into the ninth inning. Strydom added a scoreless inning of his own in the ninth. The Vikings looked for one last rally but were sat down in order in the bottom half to close out the game.
Berry will be back in action this Saturday as they take a short ride down to Oglethorpe University and play the Stormy Petrels in a three-game set.
