MARIETTA, OHIO - The Berry College baseball team traveled to Marietta, OH, to take on Marietta College in a two-game series. Berry fell behind early and was never able to climb back into the game, losing 13-1.
Eric Fountain took the ball for the Vikings in game one. Marietta attacked Fountain early with a leadoff home run to put the Pioneers up early 1-0. The offense did not stop there for Marietta, as they put up four more runs to create a five-run deficit for Berry going into the second inning. Jackson Collett relieved Fountain after one inning. Collett was able to work a clean second inning, but got into some trouble in the third inning, allowing one run to score and extending the Pioneer lead to six.
Berry was able to load the bases with zero outs in the fourth inning, but was only able to scratch across one run. However, Marietta was able to quickly get the run back in the bottom of the inning off of some defensive miscues from the Vikings. Brady Greene entered the game in the fifth, following Collett. The hitting parade from Marietta continued in the seventh as the Pioneers scored two more runs to increase the lead further.
Marietta continued to add on to the lead, increasing to 13-1.
Berry is back in action Saturday at 1pm, where the Vikings will look to split the series.
