Football Rolls Past Hawks 58-28 to Kick Off Season

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Berry College football team rolled to a 58-28 victory over the Huntingdon College Hawks to open their 2025 season on Saturday afternoon at Valhalla Stadium in front of a sold out crowd.

The Vikings got off to a quick start as they scored on their second drive of the game with Andrew Hunter using a QB sneak on his first play of the game after coming in off the bench to open the scoring with 9:28 left in the first. The Vikings defense then shut down the Hawks on their next drive while the offense answered with another touchdown with another big drive ending with another excellent rushing touchdown by Hunter. The Vikings then went for two and converted to increase their lead to 15-0.

The Hawks found an answer to the Vikings stifling defense in the the second as they scored to make it 14-7. The Vikings special teams promptly answered with an electric record setting 100 yard kickoff return by Zavion Plunkett to push their lead to 23-7 converting once again on the two point conversion. The Vikings defense then stifled the Hawks once again with special teams giving them great field possession on the next drive on the Huntingdon 27 yard line. Josh Rogers then rushed up the middle for a 27 yard touchdown as the Vikings stretched their lead to 30-7 with 10:59 to go in the half. The Vikings would continue to dominate the second quarter as Hunter turned to the air delivering a 50 yard touchdown pass to Nate Lyons with 7:24 remaining to increase the lead to 37-7.

The Vikings defense continued to shut down the Hawks while the offense was unstoppable on the next drive with Hunter continuing to air it out to set himself up for his third rushing touchdown of the game to put the Vikings up 44-7 with 4:36 to go. The Vikings defense then shutdown the Hawks as they went into halftime up 44-7.

The second half was much lower scoring as the teams turned to their benches which gave a slight advantage to the Hawks as they outscored the Vikings 14-7 in the third quarter to get within 51-21. The Vikings only touchdown of the quarter was another highlight reel one as Sammy Kunczewski raced for a 100 yard kickoff return touchdown giving the Vikings two in the same game when they had yet to ever record one. 

The fourth quarter was also low scoring as the Vikings would add another touchdown on their first drive this time with third string QB Caleb Peevy delivering a 32 yard touchdown pass to Grant Cook on 4th and 7 to make it 58-21. The Hawks would add another touchdown in garbage time as the Vikings prevailed 58-28.

Hunter put on a show for the Vikings throwing for 105 yard and one touchdown while adding three more on the ground with 23 yards rushing. Kunczewski also racked up an impressive 140 return yards on three returns on special teams.
