Vikings Crush Colonels

The Vikings defeat the Colonels in straight sets on Sunday afternoon.
Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Tx. - Fueled by a dominant offensive performance, No. 15 Berry College steamrolled SAA rival Centre College in straight sets (25-19, 25-18, 25-15) to wrap up the Trinity Tri in San Antonio on Sunday.
 
The Vikings (10-2, 2-1 SAA), were guided by the strong swing of Lura Underwood throughout the match. The senior notched 10 kills with 16 points attributed to her stat sheet on the afternoon. In 18 attacks, Underwood clipped a .500 hitting percentage. Madie Whitehead balanced Underwood's offensive firepower with her strong defensive play. Whitehead gathered 11 digs and three assists on the day. The Vikings tallied 37 kills on 86 swings, finishing with a .326 hitting percentage over three sets. 
 
Berry battled through an early deficit before storming back to take the opening set 25-19 over Centre College (7-5, 0-3 SAA). After trailing 11-5, the Vikings found their rhythm behind kills from Underwood, Cali Armstead, and Whitehead, along with service aces by Underwood and Ava Brovet that fueled a pivotal run. Berry's front line tightened up late with key blocks from Brovet and Blakely Barnes, while Centre was undone by a string of service errors down the stretch. The Vikings closed out the set on a 20-8 run, seizing momentum and setting the tone for the sweep.
 
The Vikings carried their momentum into the second frame, overwhelming Centre with a fast start in a 25-18 win. Barnes, Whitehead, and Underwood paced the attack early, while Brovet set the tone with crisp assists. A run of kills from Whitehead and Underwood stretched the Vikings' lead to 13-5, forcing a Colonel timeout. Berry's front row continued to dominate as Underwood delivered a service ace and Barnes combined with Shelby Harris for a key block to extend the cushion. Though Centre strung together a small rally, the Vikings responded calmly before sealing the set on a service ace from Kara Schmit to go up 2-0 in the match.
 
In the final set, the Vikings wasted no time closing out the match, racing out to a 7-0 lead and dominating the Colonels in a 25-15 final set. Keira Kruk and Maddie Dahl chipped in with timely kills as the Vikings stretched the margin to double digits. Underwood then took over at the service line, delivering three straight aces to push Berry to set point. Though Centre strung together a brief rally, Berry sealed the sweep with a Kruk kill off a Brovet set, securing a decisive 3-0 victory.

The Vikings will travel back to The Cage to take on Southwestern University on September 27 at 1:00 p.m.
