Women's Volleyball Opens Season With Big Wins Over Tigers and Pioneers

Lexington, Ky. - The Berry College Vikings volleyball team opened their season at the Transylvania Tournament taking down the Wittenberg University Tigers 3-1 before dominating the host Transylvania University Pioneers with a 3-0 sweep on Friday evening in Lexington.

Game 1:
The first set was tight early on with the teams exchanging leads as a kill by Madie Whitehead put the Vikings up 8-7. The Tigers would come right back to take a 10-8 lead. The Vikings would rally to tie the set twice before the Tigers went back ahead 15-13. The Vikings then seized control with a 4-0 run as back to back blocks by Cali Armstead along with Keira Kruk and Ava Brovet put the Vikings back ahead 17-15. The Tigers would make it 17-16 but the Vikings closed out the set on an 8-0 run led by two aces from Brovet and two kills from Madie Whitehead to prevail 25-16 and grab a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers battled back in the second set as they went up 11-7 with the Vikings trying to keep it close as a kill from Kruk pulled them within 11-9. The Tigers had all the answers though as they raced out to a 23-12 lead. The Vikings didn't give up as they went on a 9-1 run led by three service aces from Maddie Dahl to get within 24-21 but they weren't able to pull off their comeback attempt as the Tigers took the set 25-21 and tied the game 1-1.

The Vikings looked to take back control in the third set but the Tigers had other ideas as they took an early lead before racing out to an 18-12 advantage. The Vikings regrouped quickly as Brovet set up Lura Underwood for a big kill to spark a 6-0 run to tie the game 18-18. The Tigers would come right back to take the lead but again the Vikings came right back to tie it 20-20 before forcing two errors to take a 22-21 advantage. This time the Tigers answered but the Vikings proved to be stronger as a kill by Whitehead and a block by Whitehead and Armstead sealed a stunning 25-23 comeback win to put the Vikings ahead 2-1.

The Vikings fed off their momentum from the third set as they raced out to an early 7-1 lead in the fourth set led by two kills from Underwood. The Tigers looked for a response as they made it 13-8 but the Vikings were too powerful as they used another 7-1 run with two more kills from Underwood to take a commanding 20-9 lead. The Vikings then put the game away with a big block by Armstead to win 25-14 and 3-1.

It was a team effort across the board as Underwood led the Vikings with 11 kills, Whitehead led with five aces, Armstead led with six blocks, Brovet led with 35 assists and Andrea Hurt led with 25 digs.

Game 2:
The Vikings looked to avenge their loss from the previous season at home to the Pioneers and they returned the favor sweeping the Pioneers. The Vikings didn't get off to the best start as the Pioneers led 8-7 but a big kill from Kruk setup by Brovet sparked a 5-0 run as the Vikings took a 12-8 lead. The Pioneers rallied to tie it 14-14 but it was all Vikings as back to back kills from Brovet and Kruk put them up 18-14. The Pioneers would get back to within 19-18 but the Vikings didn't let them get any closer as they pulled away to win 25-19 on an ace by Kruk to put them up 1-0.

The Vikings dominated the second set as they raced out to a 10-4 lead with two kills each from Whitehead and Armstead. The Pioneers looked to answer but the Vikings continued to pull away as two more kills from Whitehead and two from Blakely Barnes put them up 20-7. The Pioneers made it 20-9 but the Vikings roared away to a 25-11 sealed by a kill from Kruk to put them up 2-0.

The Vikings looked to put away the Pioneers quickly in the third set but it took a little bit of time as they led 10-8 before going on a 5-0 run with two aces and a kill by Underwood to give them a 15-8 lead. The Pioneers would answer to make it 15-10 but the Vikings were too much for them to handle as they closed out the game on a 7-1 run highlighted by four more kills from Whitehead including three in a row as they won 25-13 and 3-0.

This time it was Whitehead leading the way with 14 kills, while Underwood led with three aces and four blocks. Brovet also led with another 29 assists while Hurt led with 17 digs.

The Vikings wrap up play at the Transylvania Tournament in Lexington, Kentucky as they take on Wartburg College on Saturday, August 30 at 3:00 PM.
