MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Berry Baseball took on a doubleheader against Rhodes College on Friday afternoon, where they lost game one by a final score of 5-0 and lost game two by a final of 3-2.
Game One: Rhodes 5 – Berry 0Â
The Vikings were able to put together a respectable seven hits against the Rhodes pitching staff, but were not able to generate a spark on the scoreboard. Andrew Pendleton and Nick Brunswick each poured in two hits, while Pendleton and Charles Pulaski each administered a double to keep the Vikings afloat.Â
The Vikings began the game by falling victim to a double play after a Brunswick single that capped off their first showing in the batter's box. The Viking defensive unit shined in the bottom of the first though, as they turned a double play with a runner in scoring position to avoid an early Lynx run. Â
The Pitching staffs for both squads were able to keep the opposing bats quiet in the early innings, as the game remained scoreless with Jackson Halla on the mound heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. The home half of the fourth inning would belong to the home team, as Rhodes took control with three runs to take a 3-0 lead over the Vikings.Â
Berry was not able to respond in the top of the fifth, as they went in order with three ground outs.Â
A Lynx home run extended their lead in the fifth inning out to 4-0.Â
Chase Edmonds and Alex Knapp each earned their way on base at first and second, but a double play came to halt the Vikings' crusade. Later in the inning, a strikeout would lead them to the bottom of the sixth, still trailing 4-0. Â
In the top of the seventh, Pulaski deposited a beautiful double into left field that nearly galvanized the Viking bats. Pulaski's double did not materialize on the scoreboard though, as the Vikings remained behind by four runs. Â
The Lynx closed the door on game one with a run in the bottom of the seventh that led to the final score of 5-0, as the Vikings came up short in game one. Â
Game Two: Rhodes 3 – Berry 2Â
A Brunswick single got things going for the Vikings offensively in the top of the first, but he was then caught stealing at second base for the third out of the opening inning of play.Â
The man on the mound for Berry in game two was sophomore Mason Snyder, who was able to keep the Lynx batters at bay for the first two innings of play. Snyder finished with four strikeouts on the day to pace the Berry defense. Â
The tide finally turned for the Viking batting order in the top of the third, as junior Aiden Cloud eyed down a pitch and ignited the tip of his bat with dynamite, as he combusted a ball into the atmosphere for the first home run of his career that also scored Hayden Gilbert and gifted the Vikings a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning.Â
The Vikings then gave up a run but were able to seal home half of the third inning a few plays later with a beautifully executed double play by the infield, leaving them with a 2-1 lead at the top of the fourth. Â
After not generating any offense in the top of the fourth, the Vikings would give up a pivotal home run that knotted the score at 2-2.Â
The two defensive lines made play after play in the following three-half innings. The climax of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning where Rhodes was able to drive in a run off of an RBI single to left center to take a 3-2 lead.Â
The Vikings were able to pick it up defensively in crucial moments to get out of the bottom of the sixth but were unable to overcome the one-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh, which sealed their fate as they fell to the Lynx, 2-3. Â
Berry will be in action again tomorrow to complete the three-game series against Rhodes at 1 PM ET.
