MOUNT BERRY, Ga. -- The Berry Vikings dropped the series finale Sunday against the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels, by a score of 18-10.
Mason Snyder started the game for the Vikings and ran into trouble early. A leadoff double and a couple of singles had the Petrels up 2-0 before Berry had an opportunity to bat. Two singles and a wild pitch in the bottom of the first had the Vikings at second and third, but no runs materialized from the scenario.
Snyder rebounded with two quick innings to steal some momentum for Berry, which they capitalized on in the bottom of the third. Brighton Quinnelly's leadoff double off of the first base bag and Alex Knapp's sacrifice bunt had the Vikings 90 feet away. Nick Brunswick then blasted an opposite-field home run to tie the game at two apiece.
The wheels came off for Snyder in the fourth inning, and Mason Pearcy's double put the Petrels back on top 3-2. Several batters later, Tyler Cassidy entered the game for Berry and escaped the inning with the score 6-2 in favor of Oglethorpe.
Another Pearcy RBI hit extended the Petrels lead to 7-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth, where the Vikings responded with four runs of their own. Three straight RBI singles by Brunswick, Riley Uhls, and Andrew Pendleton had Berry in striking range, and Caleb Spikes's RBI groundout left the Vikings trailing 7-6 after the inning ended.
Oglethorpe tacked on another run in the top of the sixth inning on Drew Jabaley's sacrifice fly, pushing their lead to 8-6. Berry took the lead for the first time in the game in the bottom of the sixth, as Knapp's walk and stolen base started the momentum for the Vikings. A flyout moved Knapp to third, and Uhls's single scored him, cutting the Petrels' lead to one run. Pendleton's double into no-man's land in shallow left center tied the game, and Charles Pulaski gave the Vikings the lead on his RBI single in right field, with the score now 9-8 in favor of Berry.
Aubrey Moraitakis worked a clean seventh inning, giving the bats an opportunity to extend their lead. Berry threatened again in the bottom of the seventh, but a batter's interference call stalled their momentum, and the lead remained 9-8 heading into the eighth.
The Vikings lost control of the game in the eighth inning, as the Petrels retook the lead and scored 10 runs in the inning. Oglethorpe loaded the bases early in the inning, and they kept rolling with small ball, as they tied the game and took the lead on RBI singles. The backbreaker was Jaxson Corr's bases-clearing double, which scored three runs and made the score 14-9. A passed ball and another single added two more runs, before Isaiah Pou's two-run home run capped the scoring and gave the Petrels an 18-9 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth.
Berry tried to start a comeback in the bottom of the ninth, but Hayden Gilbert's RBI single was all the damage they could do as the game ended 18-10.
Brunswick led the team with three RBIs, while Pendleton and Uhls each had two RBIs, increasing Uhls's RBI total to 12 on the series. Pulaski, Spikes, and Gilbert each and an RBI. Uhls and Pendleton also led the team with three hits, and Brunswick had two hits.
Snyder started the game and went 3.2 innings, allowing four earned runs with one strikeout. Cassidy then pitched the next 2.2 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, striking out one batter and walking none. Moraitakis had one strikeout in his 1.1 innings of work, and Cole Porter finished the game, throwing the final 1.2 innings and allowing one run with no walks.
The Vikings look to rebound Tuesday, as they head to Tennessee to face Maryville College, with the game set to start at 2 p.m. ET.
