DANVILLE, Ky. - The Berry women's track and field team sit in first place after day one of competition at the SAA Championships with 74 points.
Head coach Luke Syverson says, "The women had an amazing day." and it truly shows in their results! They currently sit 17 points ahead of where they were last year, pushing them to first place after day one when they trailed Centre last year.
In the weight throw, all five women scored points for Berry, going 1-2-3-6-8 with
Avery Jones leading the way and claiming a first place (conference champion) victory with a throw of 15.93m on her fourth attempt to break the conference record and her new personal best.
Onoyeme Egure placed second with a throw of 15.13m and
Malysha Winston in third at 14.17m.
Kris Williams led the high jump for the Vikings with a second-place finish to claim Second Team All-SAA honors on her 1.62m jump to give Berry eight points while she broke the Indoor School Record.
Julia Shipes, a sophomore, took fourth place at 1.52m.
Macy Murdock and
Courtney Jones earned points for Berry in the Long Jump placing third and fourth respectively with leaps of 5.23m and 5.10m.
In the women's 5000m,
Ariel Ellis placed second as a junior with a time of 18:22.93 (a PR) to garner eight points for her team with
Isabella Tedesco placing seventh.
As a team in the 4000m Distance Medley Relay, the quad of
Anna Ayers,
Josie Loggins,
Olivia Lambert, and
Anna Rose took home the gold and 10 points for the team with a time of 12:42.25, 30 seconds faster than any other team.
Freshman
Lucy Nicholson highlighted her career today breaking both the school record and notching a new personal best in the 60m dash and the 200m prelims to advance to both of finals tomorrow with times of 7.95 and 26.31, respectively.
Murdock advanced in all of her prelim events, the 400m and 60 hurdles with
Julianne Shirley advancing with her teammate in the 400m and
Josie Loggins adavancing with Murdock in the 60m hurdles.
