Box Score ATLANTA - In a last minute scheduling due to inclement weather, the ladies were invited to play indoors against Emory University, the 2024 ITA Southern Regional Champions and arguably the toughest opponents that the women will face this season.
Doubles began strong as
Lauren Masteller / Saris Mejia at first and
Sakura Manning /
Maggie Cox at second stayed on serve with their opponents, but ultimately succumbed to their opponent's shot making and strategy, both losing 1-6.
Olivia Walton and
Paige Evans at third doubles were up against some of Emory's strongest servers, but still managed to create opportunities and deuce points. However, they were unable to convert on those points, leading to a 0-6 loss.
In singles, the women recognized that they faced an uphill battle but refused to throw in the towel, with
Lauren Masteller at first singles having consistent rallies of over 20 shots, only narrowly losing 3-6, 2-6. Saris was on serve in the first set and was on track for a tiebreak, but sprained her ankle just before the end of the first set, retiring 4-6. The remaining Berry players did their best to adapt and to extend the points, leading to lengthy matches but
Sakura Manning at third and
Sophie Gibbs at fifth each lost 0-6, 0-6, and
Olivia Walton at fourth lost 0-6, 1-6, followed by
Carolina Hanson at sixth 1-6, 0-6.
The Berry women were excited to play and to learn from their matches versus Emory, and will look to apply their skills and determination to next Monday's home match against Covenant College.
