Box Score MOUNT BERRY, Ga. -The Berry men faced Wallace State Community College in a rematch of their meet from Fall 2024. Having lost their previous bout, the men were determined to play their best tennis and show that they have come a long way in these past few months.
Doubles began with the new duo of Noah Koch and freshman Leo Nedkov at first doubles, who lost 0-6 against a highly competitive team. Last year's rock solid, second doubles team of Jake Chapman and Aiden Benoualid kept up with their opponent point by point, but were unfortunately broken on the final game of the set to lose 5-7. Another new pairing at third doubles, senior Bohdan Higley and freshman Ethan Ellison, worked effectively and dominated their service games as the two tallest men on the team. However, they too were broken on the final game of their set to lose 5-7.
Despite losing the doubles matches, the men knew they could catch up with 4 singles wins. Aiden Benoualid at sixth singles and Leo Nedkov at third singles lost 2-6, 0-6 and 0-6, 3-6, respectively, but produced some of their best tennis to date in nearly two hour long matches. Bohdan, having only played doubles last season, was bumped up to fourth singles as a test of his service and volley prowess, but ran into a difficult and consistent opponent who beat Bohdan 6-2, 6-1. Even though the meet was lost 0-4, the remaining three players were determined to continue the battle. Both Jace Goode at fifth singles and Jake Chapman at second singles lost closely contested final sets, wearing out their opponents to the point of cramping and losing by just a few points with scores 6-7, 7-6, 5-10 and 3-6, 6-1, 6-7, respectively. Noah Koch at first singles faced difficulties against one of his strongest opponents to date, but despite losing the first set 1-6, was able to run down every ball and extend the match long enough to win the final set tiebreak with a match score of 1-6, 6-4, 7-6.
The men knew they were up against one of their strongest opponents of the season, but left proud with close matches in doubles and singles. Head coach Doug Elly was impressed with the Berry men's mental states, as they never gave up and used this opportunity not necessarily to score a win, but to improve and to keep pushing their limits. The men look forward to their next contest this Saturday, February 22nd vs. Milligan University during Pack The House day.
