DEMOREST, Ga. - The Berry College women's basketball team traveled to Demorest, GA to take on Piedmont University in the CCS-SAA classic. The Vikings lost a close game to the Lions 59-57.
Elly Callihan was able to get the Vikings on the board first with two converted free throw attempts. Berry was able to jump out to an early 8-1 lead thanks to two baskets by
Briaiah Lewis. The Vikings defense created fits for the Lion offense during the first quarter, creating eight turnovers during the period. The first quarter ended with the Vikings having a three-point lead over the Lions. The second quarter started with the Lions quickly regaining the lead before
Isabella Ramirez stopped the run with a layup. Not much happened offensively for the remainder of the half as the Lions pushed their lead to 27-18 heading into the break.
The second half started with two forced turnovers from the Vikings resulting in a made three pointer and layup, both from Callihan.
Emma Hempker then followed that up with a three pointer of her own to cut the deficit to two. A couple of layups for the Lions brought the lead back out to five before a commercial timeout.
Ava Travis was then able to tie up the game at 39 a piece with a layup going into the fourth quarter. With five minutes left in the game,
Jeryn Jarrett knocked down a huge three to give the Vikings their first lead of the game since early in the first half. The rest of the game went back and forth as both the teams kept taking the lead with clutch baskets. Piedmont finally took the lead with 18 seconds left from two free throws, but Berry could not convert their last second shot attempt. Lewis finished as the leading scorer for the Vikings with 12 points in the game.
Berry travels to Centre College to compete in the Centre Classic against Ashbury University on Friday.
