DANVILLE, Ky., – The Berry College volleyball team traveled to Kentucky to take on the Centre Colonels on Saturday afternoon, dropping the match five sets (3-2).
The Colonels jumped out to an early lead in the first set, taking the 9-4 advantage before Berry called a timeout. The Vikings were able to regain the lead 24-23 with
Madie Whitehead recording seven kills during the set. However, the Colonels quickly responded with three straight points to take the first set 26-24.
A few early kills by
Lura Underwood and
Cali Armstead were able to help the Vikings jump out to an early 8-4 lead in the second set before a Colonel timeout. Underwood was able to keep the pressure with a few more kills to secure the second set for the Vikings 25-17.
Ava Brovet was also able to secure a couple of kills of her own.
The third set went back and forth between the Vikings and Colonels with both teams battling for the crucial advantage. The Vikings were ahead for most of the set until the Colonels tied the set up at 24 apiece and later pulled away to take the set 27-25. Underwood continued with recording three more kills. Kiera Kruk and
Blakely Barnes also mixed in to score for the Vikings.
An early kill and block by Barnes gave the Vikings a 3-0 lead to start the fourth set. Barnes continued with three more blocks and two more kills to help take a commanding 17-11 lead before a Centre timeout. Berry was able to win the fourth set thanks to a kill from Barnes and an assist from Brovet to tie the match up at 2-2.
Centre jumped out to an early lead in the fifth set 6-1 before Berry cut into the lead from kills by Whitehead. The final point came in nail biting fashion with Centre leading 13-12 at the timeout. Centre eventually took the final point to win the deciding set 15-13.
Whitehead and Underwood led the way for the Vikings offensively, combining for 34 total kills between the two. Armstead and Barnes each recorded six kills as well.
The Vikings are back in action tomorrow, Nov. 2
nd at Sewanee to wrap up regular season conference play.
