Box Score ROME, Ga. - The Berry women were eager to open their season against long-time, Rome rival Shorter University.
With the tennis rules changed this season from Division III to Division II/I, it meant that doubles matches were now one set first to set instead of 8, and a fast start would be necessary.
The ladies delivered, with
Lauren Masteller and newcomer
Sophie Gibbs winning 6-1 at first doubles, and returning second doubles team
Lacey Craig and Saris Mejia following suit with a 6-2 victory. Unfortunately, Shorter defaulted their third doubles and sixth singles due to a lack of players, which gave Berry a doubles sweep!
Lauren at first singles and Saris at second singles maintained their momentum, winning 6-1, 6-0 and 6-4, 6-2, respectively. With the overall team victory now guaranteed, the women began to play looser and Lacey at third singles impressed everyone with a comeback victory, winning 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) despite trailing 0-3 in the second set.
Sophie Gibbs and
Sakura Manning at fourth and fifth singles were intent on making this a clean sweep, and Sakura delivered with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Sophie did not bow to the pressure, and mounted a second set comeback, winning 6-1, 6-4 to secure the sweep.
Having beaten Shorter University 7-0 today, the women will look to extend their win streak at the ITA regionals in a few weeks, where they will be representing Berry College in singles and doubles tournament play.
