MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Vikings home opener ended in success against opponent Pfeiffer with a huge showing at Valhalla as they stormed past the Falcons, 19-3.
Berry starts their season off with a win Saturday night as three players score four goals and defensively only allowing three.
A rocky first quarter left both teams searching for their groove as first game jitters became apparent, especially in front of the home crowd for the Vikings. However,
Katie Claire Smith would get one to go just under the five-minute mark to give her team the advantage they never lost (1-0).
Nerves settled into the second and Berry started to come alive. With four goals in two minutes, the team had found their groove for the season. Molly Cross and
Abby Sprayberry found their first of four goals on the night while
Myskina Bolavong held strong in the goal.
Pfeiffer was finally able to make their way onto the scoreboard at nine minutes (5-1). That goal did not phase Berry though, the team closed off the first half with a 4-1 run to push the score to 9-2 at halftime.
Highlighting the 4-1 run was
Abby Sprayberry with back-to-back goals in a quick turnaround.
After the first half, the Vikings picked it up even more on the defensive side. Eighteen caused turnovers led to more opportunities for them to score and continue to build on their already bolstering momentum.Â
Besides Bolavong in the goal, Sprayberry led with four caused turnovers (a new career high) and other leading scorer
Dani Taraska had two with seven ground balls.
The Vikings looked unstoppable as they continued to pressure the Falcons, with
Molley Cross's four goals, three coming in the second half wearing down on their foe.
Tonight showcased why Berry was voted to finish in the top of the SAA this season.
Catch them back in action on Friday February 16 at Guilford, game time set for 7:00 PM ET.
