MOUNT BERRY, Ga.- For the first time since 2017, Berry's women's soccer team could not keep the Tigers in their cages as Sewanee defeated the Vikings in their Southern Athletic Association season opener 2-0 last Saturday at Bob Pearson Field.
The Vikings (4-5-0, 0-1-0 SAA) could not keep up with the offensive attacks from the Tigers throughout the 90 minutes of play. Sewanee (3-1-3, 1-0-0 SAA) tallied 26 shot attempts compared to Berry's four.Â
With only two shots on the goal in the first-half, Berry's Maggie Jones kept the Vikings alive with two saves, keeping the game scoreless through the first 45 minutes.
The 57th minute proved to be the difference for Berry as the Tigers finally broke the scoring open after five consecutive shot attempts. Sewanee added an insurance goal in the 75th minute, making the final score 2-0.
Sophia Coon, Savannah Courtenay, and Maeve McDougal led the Vikings' offensive attack with one shot on goal each.
The Vikings will be on the road this Saturday to face Centre in Southern Athletic Association play. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
