Vikings Clip Stormy Petrels On The Road

The No.13-ranked Berry Vikings (7-3, 1-0) started Southern Athletic Association conference play by sweeping Oglethorpe on the road on Wednesday night 25-21, 26-14, 25-11. Lura Underwood, Bella Boston, and Olivia Mallow combined for 27 kills out of the 42 total that the Vikings put down on the Stormy Petrels.

The two teams went back and forth early in the first set until the Vikings finally created a 17-14 distance with a four point run and back to back kills from Mallow and Lindsey MacDiarmid. In just five plays, Underwood put down four kills leading Berry to set point. A massive solo block from Mallow ended the first set the Vikings way.

The Stormy Petrels put up a fight in the second set attempting to make it even with Berry early in the match. Oglethorpe's offense poked holes in the Berry defense, pushing their lead to 17-13. Berry came storming back racking up four straight to tie it back up at 17 a piece. But Oglethorpe found their groove yet again, coming to set point 24-21. Fortunately for the Vikings, the Stormy Petrels self-destructed with three straight attack errors to give the set win to Berry.

The Vikings continued all of the momentum from the second set and made the third and final set short and sweet. Berry jumped to a 10-2 lead early in the set and didn't let up until the final point.

Underwood led the team in kills with 10 and hit .400 on the day. Mallow racked up six total blocks for the night and trailed Underwood in kills with eight. MacDiarmid recorded 36 assists.

The Vikings continue conference play on the road on Saturday heading to Tennessee to face Sewanee, start time is set for 1 p.m.
