Berry battled to an 8-8 tie deep into the fourth quarter, but two late goals by Birmingham-Southern were enough to drop the Vikings, 10-8, in Southern Athletic Association men's lacrosse action in Birmingham, Ala., Sunday afternoon.
The Vikings (5-5, 1-3 SAA) used a 4-0 run in the first quarter thanks to goals from
Tyler Banfield,
Michael McKenzie,
Davis Cooke, and
Michael Beirne to make it 4-1 after a quarter. The two teams clamped down defensively in the second, with BSC getting the only goal of the period to make it 4-2 at halftime.
BSC (8-5, 3-1) scored the first goal of the third quarter, but McKenzie got Berry back on the board and restored the lead to two, 5-3. BSC would tie the score at 5-all, but Berry added two to the tally as
Joey Cuthbert restored the lead, then McKenzie completed the hat trick with 4:39 left in the third. The Panthers would then score three goals within 80 seconds to take the lead, 8-7, entering the final quarter.
The score stayed 8-7 until the midway through the fourth quarter. After a BSC timeout, the Vikings were able to get a turnover. Off the turnover, the Vikings would push ahead and Beirne would get the equalizer to make it 8-8 with 7:19 to go.
