Berry Takes Rubber Match with Greensboro

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Wesley Maxey drove in four as Berry built a big lead then held on to defeat Greensboro 16-12 to wrap up a three-game baseball series at William R. Bowdoin Field Sunday afternoon.

The Vikings (4-7) jumped in front with five runs in the first. Joey Garcia, John D'Amelio, and Garrett Lang each had RBI hits, while Maxey's single through the left side brought home a pair.

Each team scored twice in the second, with Maxey picking up his third RBI of the day with another hit to left. After the Pride managed a run in the top of the third, the Vikings exploded for seven in the home half. Nick Brunswick picked up a pair of RBI to start the scoring with a single. Later in the inning, Brunswick would score after Cloud stole second and the throw bounced away from the infield. Then, with runners on the corners, Garcia took off for second. As the throw went across the diamond, Cloud sprinted home, sliding in safely as the Vikings executed the double steal to perfection. An Andrew Pendleton RBI double tacked on another run, then D'Amelio added an RBI infield hit and Ronnie Caricofe picked up a RBI with a sacrifice fly to make it 14-3.

From there, the Vikings would tack on two more in the fourth. Maxey would triple home a run to close his four-RBI day, adding his second run scored of the contest later in the inning when he scored on an error. Greensboro (5-6) would mount a late charge, but the Vikings would hold on to earn the win.

Koby Dunn (2-0) pitched a scoreless inning of relief, allowing just a walk with one strikeout, to pick up the victory.

Berry will be back in action this Tuesday at Maryville. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
