Vikings Split with Greensboro

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Berry's offense exploded for 19 runs in game one as the Vikings split a baseball doubleheader with Greensboro, taking the first game 19-9 (7). In game two, the Vikings fell, 7-5.

Game One: Berry 19, Greensboro 9 (7)
Patrick O'Rourke worked six strong innings on the mound, allowing seven hits and three runs as Berry answered Greensboro's six-spot in the seventh with one of its own to end the contest early.

Berry trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the first, but took the lead as Joey Garcia's RBI single closed the scoring in the inning to make it 3-2.  The lead swelled to four in the fourth. A Trevor Barron two-run double made it 5-2, then Blake Hyman reached on an error, with Barron scoring on the play to make it 6-2.

In the fifth, a two-run single by Garrett Lang put Berry up 8-2. Greensboro made it 8-3 an inning later, but five runs from the Vikings in the bottom of the sixth seemed to put the game out of reach. Wesley Wade, Levi Cloud, and Caleb Spikes each had an RBI, with John D'Amelio adding two to make it 13-3 heading to the seventh.

Needing three outs to end the game early, the Vikings instead saw Greensboro score six runs. Berry would battle back in the bottom of the inning to still close the game via run rule. Cloud, Garcia, and D'Amelio each had RBI hits, and after a wild pitch brought home a run, Justin Carr singled up the middle to plate the final two runs of the game.

Five Vikings had multi-hit games, with Garcia pacing the way with a 4-for-5 contest.

Game Two: Greensboro 7, Berry 5
The Vikings led 3-2 entering the seventh, but a four-run frame for the guests helped the Pride to a 7-5 win.

An RBI ground out by Lang scored Garcia to put Berry up 1-0 after two. In the third, Cloud laced a double down the line in left, scoring Nick Brunswick for a 2-0 BC lead. After a Greensboro run in the fifth, Brunswick slapped a double to right center to score Zachary Hardee for a 3-1 Berry lead.

The Pride scored a run in the sixth to make it 3-2. Then in the seventh, four runs crossed the plate for the guests to flip the score to 6-3 for Greensboro.

Berry mounted a rally in the bottom of the inning to make it a one-run game. Wade chopped a double down the line in left, scoring Hardee. Later in the frame, Cloud's sacrifice fly scored Brunswick to cut the Pride lead to one, 6-5.

Greensboro would get a run in the eighth. Berry would get the tying runs on base in the ninth, but couldn't get the equalizer across.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game set Sunday at Noon.
