Vikings Start Cross Bay Bash 1-1

No. 5 Berry played an instant classic against No. 2 Trine Friday at the Cross Bay Bash in Newport News, Va., as the Vikings fell 4-2 in nine innings. Immediately turning around for the second game of the day, the Vikings took care of No. 8 Millikin 9-1 in six.

Game One: No. 2 Trine 4, No. 5 Berry 2 (9)
A game that lacked scoring saw all of the runs come across in extra innings, with both teams scoring twice in the eighth before Trine scored two in the ninth to take the victory.

Blair Hall pitched seven no-hit innings for the Vikings, keeping Trine out of the hit column until extra innings. In the eighth, with the International Tiebreaker Rule in effect, Trine's first hit - a double -  resulted in its first run. With two out in the inning, another hit by the Thunder made it 2-0.

Berry would also start the inning with a runner on second but would need to plate two to keep the game going. With one out in the inning, Katie White delivered a no-doubt two-run homer over the 215-foot mark in center to even the score, 2-2.

Trine would get a run across after a sac bunt and a sac fly moved the runner home from second. Unfortunately, the Vikings would head into the bottom of the inning needing two runs to tie, however, as a sol homer made it 4-2.

Berry would start with the runner on second, but there wouldn't be enough magic in the bats this time as Trine held on for the win.

Hall would take the hard-luck loss for Berry, falling to 6-1 on the season. The junior allowed just two earned runs on three hits in nine innings with seven strikeouts to her credit.

Game Two: No. 5 Berry 9, No. 8 Millikin 1 (6)
Any thoughts of a letdown after the tough loss in the first game were quickly erased in the first inning as Anna Jackson connected on a solo homer to put Berry ahead for good against the Big Blue.

Berry (13-2) kept applying pressure in the second as it grew its lead to 4-0. With two runners in scoring position, White singled to right, bringing home both Paige Bennett and Katie Parker to make it 3-0. After White stole second, Sydney Moroney dumped a single down the left field line to push the Vikings ahead by four.

The Big Blue (4-1) scored their only run in the third off of Hannah Gore, an unearned tally. Morgan Frye would quickly restore order in the fourth as her opposite field blast over the fence in right went for a three-run round tripper and a 7-1 lead.

The Vikings would clock out an inning early after staying over two innings the previous game. Hall would connect on her second homer of the year as her two-run blast would make it 9-1. That would be enough run support for Gore to close out the contest, finishing up the game with six innings of work and just the unearned run while allowing three hits and fanning five.

Berry will return to action Saturday in Newport News, facing host and No. 1 Christopher Newport at 3 p.m. and Transylvania at 5:30 p.m.
