Berry Splits to Close Cross Bay Bash

Katie White extended her consecutive games with a home run streak to three as No. 5 Berry split Saturday's games at the Cross Bay Bash in Newport News, Va., falling to No. 1 Christopher Newport 8-5 before topping Transylvania 6-5 in the nightcap.

White hit her first homer of the season Mar. 5 against Sewanee. In that seven-day span, she has hit a home run on every day that Berry has played; Mar. 8 at Randolph-Macon, Mar. 10 vs. Trine, and two today.

Game One: No. 1 Christopher Newport 8, Berry 5
Berry jumped out to a 4-0 lead through two innings, but host CNU scored seven runs in the third en route to the comeback win.

White led off the game with a homer to put Berry up 1-0. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded and two out, Jamie Jang drew a walk with the bases loaded to give Berry a 2-0 advantage.

The Vikings would load the bases again in the second. Morgan Frye would be plunked by a pitch, bringing home White to make it 3-0. Blair Hall would then hit into a fielder's choice to third, beating the throw across the diamond to avoid the double play and score Sydney Moroney to make it 4-0.

Berry would leave seven runners on base through the first three innings, and the stranded runners would come back to haunt the Vikings. The Captains would score seven runs before recording an out in the third to take a shock 7-4 advantage. Another run an inning later would make it 8-4 for the home side.

The Vikings would take advantage of an error in the fifth inning to plate a run to try and mount a rally. The Vikings would get the tying run to the plate in the seventh with two out, but a fly out would end the contest and give the Captains the win.

Game Two: Berry 6, Transylvania 5
Danielle Sudick pitched 4.2 scoreless innings of relief as the Vikings mounted a rally to beat Transylvania in Berry's final game in Newport News.

Sudick (1-0) entered with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the first, and while two of the inherited runners would score, the sophomore would only give up one hit after the first inning. She would strike out a career-high six batters in the victory.

Berry (14-3) started the game with a run as Frye singled home White to put the Vikings up in the top of the first. Transylvania would answer back in in the bottom of the frame, scoring four times to take the lead.

Slowly but surely, the Vikings chipped away at the lead. Katie White's solo homer in the second made it 4-2, and a Paige Bennett double in the third plated Hall to make it 4-3. A single back up the middle by Sydney Moroney in the fourth brought home Aleeya Thornton in the fourth, and the Vikings had the equalizer on the board.

The score stayed the same until the sixth inning. With two runners in scoring position, Anna Jackson would single back up the middle, scoring Thornton and White to give Berry a 6-4 cushion.

Transylvania would try to mount a rally in the bottom of the seventh with Hannah Gore in the circle for the Vikings, but the BC defense closed out the game. With a runner on second, a shot to the fence in left center would score a run, but Thornton hit Shelby Daniel with the throw back into the infield, and Daniel's relay to Bennett at second was in time for the tag, erasing the would-be tying run from the bases and ending the game.

With Saturday's results, the Vikings moved to 4-3 against ranked opponents so far this season. All seven games have been played against teams ranked inside the top ten of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll.

The Vikings will be back in action this Thursday at Huntingdon for a doubleheader. First pitch in Montgomery, Ala., is set for 3 p.m. EDT.
