Berry overcame a two-run deficit to take a lead in the middle innings, but four runs in the ninth inning saw the Vikings take a 6-3 loss to No. 6 Marietta at the D3 Showcase in Kannapolis, N.C., Thursday afternoon.
Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the fifth, the Vikings (2-3) came back to tie the game. With
Blake Hyman on second, a single by
John Poist scored Hyman to make it 2-1. Poist would later steal second, leading into
Levi Cloud's at bat. Cloud hit a slow roller to third, with the throw going wildly down the right field line. Poist would race home, tying the score at 2-all.
In the sixth, the Vikings would go on top.
Joey Garcia raked a double down the line in left, then moved up to third on a wild pitch. With a 3-1 count,
John D'Amelio's hard hit ball to the left side skittered into the outfield, with Garcia coming home to make it a 3-2 game.
The score would stay the same until the ninth inning, when Marietta (1-) pushed four runs across the plate, thwarting the opportunity at an upset.
Berry will return to action Friday in Kannapolis against Denison in a game scheduled for 8 p.m.
