Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | by Jason Hanes

Vikings Pour In Goals in Shutout Victory

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - For the first time in program history, Berry's women's lacrosse team posted a defensive shutout as the Vikings defeated Huntingdon 20-0 on a rain-soaked day at Valhalla Stadium.

Last season, the Vikings defeated Brevard 21-1 to set the program's standard for fewest goals allowed. In Saturday's contest, Berry (2-0) only allowed two shots, neither of which were on target. Kristina Jones and Ally Washburn each recorded 30 minutes in goal, with Jones improving to 2-0 although Berry's keepers weren't required to make a save.

Haley Larsen scored the first goal of the game 74 seconds in, with Dani Taraska doubling the margin just 38 seconds later. Taraska's goal would be a harbinger of things to come as the freshman ended the day with a team-high six to take over the BC lead in goals this season with nine.

Taraska would finish the first half of her double hat trick performance with 6:45 left in the first quarter as the Vikings built a 6-0 lead. It would be 8-0 after the first 15 minutes as Molley Cross finished the scoring in the quarter with Berry on the man-advantage.

Abby Sprayberry and Taraska would score in the first 93 seconds of the second quarter to stake the Vikings to a 10-0 lead, and the clock would only stop for timeouts, the end of quarters, and the occasional yellow card for the rest of the way. Taraska's final goal of the game came with 4:00 left in the second quarter, and by then, the Vikings led 14-0.

AnnaKate Estock scored Berry's next goal with 6:50 to go in the third quarter, and when Huntingdon (0-1) finally registered a shot nearly two minutes later, the sides had played almost 40 minutes with Berry up 15-0 and the shot total at 32-1. Estock and Adrienna Van Soelen would each score before the quarter ended to make it 17-0 with 45 minutes elapsed.

Sprayberry scored early in the fourth quarter, with Taraska getting the assist, to make it 18-0. Huntingdon's second shot would come with 8:53 left in regulation on a free position attempt that went wide. From there, Berry would net two more, with Cross scoring on a free position attempt, then Isabel Pregont scored after a scramble just outside the 8-meter with 30 seconds to go in the contest. There wouldn't be another draw in the contest as the clock expired with Berry taking a 20-0 win.

Taraska finished with a game-high seven points, with Estock's three assists going into her total for a five-point afternoon. With a hat trick and two assists, Cross finished the afternoon with a five-point effort as well. Smith's two goals were the first of her career, as was Pregont's tally.

The Vikings will be back in action next Saturday at Pfeiffer. Opening draw is set for 11 a.m.
