MOUNT BERRY, GA.— Tori Toellner fired a shot into the top right corner of the net to send the Berry women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory against Southern Athletic Association foe No. 20 Centre at Bob Pearson Field Friday evening.
"The girls just gave it everything they absolutely had," said Berry head coach Kathy Brown. "It was so fun to be a part of the ride and experience the joy with them."
The loss was Centre's first in SAA regular season play since Oct. 19, 2014; in addition, it was Centre's fifth loss all-time against SAA foes in the 11 years of the league.
In the 67th minute, Sophia Coon sent a shot flying from outside the top right corner of the 18-yard box which caught the back left corner of the net, giving Berry (6-3, 2-0 SAA) the 1-0 edge.
"This is such an amazing feeling because I know I did this for myself, my team, and all of the seniors who have wanted to beat Centre their whole career," said Coon.
In the 71st minute, after a corner kick deflected off of a Centre defender, Toellner struck the game winning goal into the top right corner of the net to lead the Vikings to a 2-0 lead.
Goalkeeper Julia Massa recorded five saves, allowing a 78th minute goal to the Colonels but stymying the guests the rest of the way.
The Vikings had six corner kicks and three shots on goal, while Centre (9-2, 1-1 SAA) had 12 corners and six shots on goal.
The Vikings recorded their first win against Centre since Oct. 11, 2014, improving to 15-2 all-time against the perennial SAA power.
Next the Vikings will be on the road to Birmingham to face Southern Athletic Association Birmingham Southern next Friday with a kickoff time at 5:00 pm. EDT
