MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - A 6-0 advantage fell by the wayside Thursday for Berry as the Vikings fell, 13-6, to No. 4 LaGrange at William R. Bowdoin Field in baseball action.
Berry (21-9) scored in each of the first three innings to build a six-run lead.
Andrew Pendleton's RBI groundout in the bottom of the first started the scoring. One inning later, a
Dalton Smith RBI single brought in an unearned run to make it a 2-0 contest.
The Vikings took advantage of a LaGrange mental miscue to score four runs in the third. With runners on the corners following a
Spence Johns double and a fielder's choice, Pendleton grounded into a fielder's choice for an out, with Johns scoring to make it 3-0. After back-to-back singles loaded the bases,
Levi Cloud and Smith drew walks to give each of them an RBI to make it 5-0. After a pitching change, an error on another fielder's choice brought in the sixth run of the game for BC and the fourth of the inning.
LaGrange (21-3) would rally back, scoring three in the fourth to cut the lead in half. Two more scored in the sixth to make it a 6-5 contest, with the Panthers taking advantage of a wild pitch on strike three with two out in the seventh to put together a three-run rally to take the lead. Five more insurance runs would cross the plate in the ninth to seal the win for the guests.
Cate led the Vikings with three hits in the contest and also made four strong defensive plays in right field, including throwing out a runner trying to score in the third inning.
Berry will be back in action this Saturday in Conway, Ark., as it takes on Hendrix. First pitch in Saturday's doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. EDT.
